Dallas has extended its COVID-19 emergency declaration through May 12.

“The City of Dallas officially began the process of recovering,” Mayor Eric Johnson told NBC 5. “We are taking action. The City of Dallas expects to take a significant hit to our budget through loss of sales tax revenue. Unlike the federal government, we have to balance our budget.”

The city is working on financial strategies to help ease the crisis. According to NBC 5, Dallas Chief Financial Officer Elizabeth Reich said $234 million was deposited in the city’s account. An additional  $34 million is anticipated for coronavirus expenses.

Small businesses that were forced to close received $5 million of the federal funding, and $14 million will be used for mortgage and rent expenses.

An ordinance was approved that would delay evictions during this time if the tenants were unable to pay because of coronavirus. It provides a 21-day delay. Other programs are in the works to help provide rent help for landlords.
