The Mesquite Arts Council has been awarded a $10,000 grant by the National Endowment for the Arts for supporting Arts Engagement in American Communities.
Funds will be used to support the Mesquite Arts Council's virtual and online programming, including MAC Doodles, virtual workshops and the Tote-and-Go program.
“The arts center has had to adapt to the impacts of the pandemic," Cohn Drennan, manager of the Mesquite Arts Center, said in a release. "Our staff and art partners have developed some wonderful virtual programs and safe contactless opportunities. This grant will allow us to continue offering art and culture to the citizens of Mesquite for free.”
The center hosts more than two dozen programs for all ages, exploring various art mediums. The grant will allow it to continue providing educational content and family-focused activities online through August 2021.
At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, staff began offering online programming, starting with MAC Doodles, a virtual doodling workshop for all skill levels. They also hosted virtual craft workshops. Later, they started providing kits with supplies for families to pick up and then watch video instructions to complete the project from the safety of their home. This evolved into a weekly Tote-and-Go program that serves 100 families each week.
More information about the programs can be found on the Mesquite Art Council's website.
