New year, new school: TJ and Walnut Hill state-of-the-art facilities to be unveiled

What:

Refurbishments and new additions for Thomas Jefferson High School and Walnut Hill International Leadership Academy are now complete and we welcome media to capture what will be the heart of the TJ and Walnut Hill community. Reporters will have a chance to tour each campus, witness their complete reconstruction and discover how these schools will reform the true neighborhood school experience.

Media:

  • The tour will begin at Thomas Jefferson High School and conclude at the Walnut Hill campus.
  • The sneak peek includes a preview of classrooms, libraries, gyms, cafeterias and other spaces.
  • Principals Benjamin Jones and Phillip Meaker along with teachers will be available for interviews.
  • Spanish-speaking representatives from each school will also be available for interviews.
This will be the only media opportunity for visuals and interviews. There will be no media allowed into campus on Monday, Jan. 9.

The renovated Thomas Jefferson High School is approximately 330,000 square feet, with much of the existing 64-year-old building receiving refurbishments and additions. Some of these renovations include a new gym, athletic improvements, renovations of existing educational spaces, new computer science labs, a library and administrative areas.

The new 118,000 square foot PreK-8th grade campus will replace the storm-damaged Walnut Hill Elementary and Cary Middle Schools. The new facility will include, age-appropriate gym spaces, a library, and cafeteria, as well as multiple exterior learning spaces.
