Performance by "queen of underground soul" part of Denton Black Film Festival
Jan. 17, 2023 – DENTON – Texas Woman's University will host multiple events of the Denton Black Film Festival, featuring a concert by Sy Smith at the Margo Jones Performance Hall.
The festival runs in person Jan. 25-29 and virtually through Feb. 5, and takes place at locations across Denton and extends to cinema, music, spoken word, art and the Technology, Education & Culture Expo.
Smith, the "queen of underground soul," will perform on Jan. 26. The concert, which will be from 8-10 p.m., includes a performance by Natural Change. To purchase tickets, visit the DBFF website.
The festival's first event on the TWU campus begins with a reception on Jan. 26 from 5-7 p.m. at the East/West Galleries in the Visual Arts Building for an art exhibit curated by Lauren Cross. The exhibit features artists Anthony Francis, Darian Dauchan, Amber Bishop and Nitashia Johnson. The exhibit runs through Feb. 17 and will be open Monday-Friday 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
The festival includes film screenings at the Campus Theater and Alamo Drafthouse, live performances at the Patterson-Appleton Arts Center and the Campus Theater, and the TEC Expo at the Denton Civic Center.
