The San Jacinto College Dance Program hosted the eighth annual Artists for Hope weekend February 10-11, 2023. Artists for Hope is a charity concert event in which all proceeds go to a local organization that positively impacts the community. This year, over $3,400 was gifted to the Pearland Neighborhood Center to continue its efforts in aiding those in need.
This two-day event consisted of six master classes and two evening concerts featuring Ad Deum Dance, NobleMotion Dance and NMD2, Aimed Dance, Pilot Dance Project, the University of St. Thomas, Social Movement Contemporary Dance Theater, Juxtapose Arts Collective, and Artistic edGe. Classes were offered in choreography, Graham modern, ballet, and contemporary, and were taught by company directors and dancers. The master classes are always free and open to the public. This year 70 participants attended including many San Jac dance students.
In addition to the live event, the Artists for Hope International Dance Film Festival presented nine dance films from Germany, Italy, Croatia, Netherlands, China, Australia, France, and the United States.
To reach more of the local community and bring dancers together, Artists for Hope partnered with NobleMotion Dance to offer the first ever Community-Based Company Premiere. Dancers were invited to apply for the opportunity to work with the company in a swift six-hour process to create a new dance which premiered at the concert on Saturday evening. Fourteen dancers were selected and participated in creating “Constructing 4158”, choreographed by Artistic Director, Dionne Noble, and dancer Tyler Orcutt. This collaboration brought together San Jacinto College Dance with NobleMotion Dance and also created opportunities for students and community dancers to connect and share in an artistic process that may not have been available to them otherwise.
A new addition to the event was the raffle, which offered participants and patrons a chance to win prizes such as gift cards, company merchandise, and even concert tickets to TUTS and Houston Ballet. The raffle raised additional funding for the Pearland Neighborhood Center and would not have been possible without the generous donations of the following organizations and individuals: Open Dance Project, Aimed Dance, Houston Contemporary Dance, NobleMotion Dance, Theater Under the Stars, Pier 6 Seafood, Frame Dance, Feijoo Ballet School, Fluid Frames Dance Photography, Houston Ballet, Lululemon, Mary Hart, and Social Movement Contemporary Dance Theater.
