Truth, Racial Healing and Transformation Week 2022: It Takes Everyone!

Austin Community College recently issued the following announcement.

Austin Community College District (ACC) invites students, faculty, staff, and community partners for Truth, Racial Healing and Transformation (TRHT) Week 2022, Monday, January 17 through Friday, January 21. The events include workshops, film screenings, and racial healing circles, meant to heal wounds the community may be feeling towards racial, gender, and equality issues. 

“The TRHT center is a space where we can have intentional conversations, learning, and growth around diversity issues,” says Dr. Khayree Williams, ACC’s Truth, Racial Healing & Transformation Center director. “Together we can find a way to engage in this work and continue to make this a better place and community.”

Events are held in more than a dozen locations around the region, including public libraries, public schools, community centers, city parks, recreation facilities, and ACC campuses.

Monday, January 17 | Martin Luther King Jr. Day

12:30 to 2 p.m.: ACC Remembers Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. III! “When is it Right to Do What is Right!? When Do We Stand Up for Social Justice!?” Zoom Link

Tuesday, January 18 | National Day of Racial Healing

1 to 2:30 p.m.: National Day of Racial Healing: Impacting Truth, Racial Healing and Transformation through the Arts. Join for an art exhibit unveiling and artist discussion with ACC Art students. Zoom Link 

5:30 to 7:30 p.m.: Racial Healing Circle! Join the discussion of Truth, Racial Healing and Transformation through storytelling. Registration is required and participants are expected to have their cameras on. Livestream through Eventbrite

Wednesday, January 19

Noon to 1:15 p.m.: “Women of Color Succeeding in the Tech Industry!” Engage with local female tech leaders regarding the expansive opportunities in a field where women and people of color are underrepresented. Zoom Link

3 to 4:15 p.m.: “Will Smith Book Club Launch Party.” ACC’s Student Government Association, Black Representation of Achievement through Student Success, and TRHT host its monthly book discussions of Actor Will Smith’s latest book "Will". Participants will receive a free copy. Participants will discuss the stories and growth shared through books. Zoom Link

Thursday, January 20

3 to 4:30 p.m.: “Mental Health and Healing in Truth, Racial Healing and Transformation Circles” Students, employees, and the community will engage in a panel discussion about mental health and healing. Zoom Link

Friday, January 21

10 to 11:30 a.m.:  Keynote Speaker for the TLED/TRHT Zoom Link

Noon to 1 p.m.: Round Rock presents “Healing Requires Unity”  Zoom Link

ACC is one of the select national institutions chosen to serve as a TRHT. The Campus Center will focus on eliminating system-inflicted trauma and harmful impacts on the community. The goal is to build cross-racial relationships that lead to racial healing and an exploration of ways to transform while creating narratives that can influence people's perspectives, perceptions, and behaviors about and toward one another.
