Houston Community College’s 17th Annual Black History Scholarship Gala takes place 7 to 8 p.m., Thursday, February 23, as an online fundraiser in partnership with Fox 26 Houston.
This year’s theme is Building a Community of Winners. Sylvester Turner, Houston’s 62nd mayor, will be honored for his service to the city and for his work in building Houston’s community of winners. The mayor will provide remarks.
Other HCC Black History Scholarship Gala honorees this year are:
Paula Harris, Executive Director of the Astros Foundation and Senior Vice President of Community Affairs
Roshunda Jones-Koumba, Theater director, Aldine Independent School District's G.W. Carver Magnet High School and Tony Award Winner
Booker T. Washington High School – The famed high school, which houses an engineering program, is celebrating 130 years of educational excellence this year.
Since 2006, under the auspices of the HCC Foundation, the HCC Black History Scholarship Gala has raised tens of thousands of dollars to provide college scholarships to deserving HCC students. For the past two years, HCC’s Black History Committee has held virtual galas, which have appeared on KPRC’s click2Houston.com and KTRK’s abc13.com.
“We are delighted to be able show our three honorees how much they mean to Houston and helping the city build a community of winners,” said Donnell Cooper, co-chair of the HCC Black History Committee. “And, Houston has shown its willingness to open its heart and wallet to help students who really need help for higher education.”
“The partnership engagement that we have with Channel 26 is a spectacular achievement that benefits everyone,” said Fheryl Prestage, co-chair of the HCC Black History Committee. “We thank them for their support. It’s going to be a great night."
Houston will air the HCC Black History Scholarship Gala on www.Fox26Houston.com. Fox26 News anchor Jonathan Martin is the host of the online event.
